Activity of the Research Laboratory

The essential goal of the lab is to promote the solution of up-to-date healthcare problems by the use of advanced measuring and information technologies. A significant part of the research capacity is devoted to the non-invasive cardiac diagnostic methods based on high-resolution bioelectric imaging technologies. The focus of activities is on the interpretation of the multi-lead measurements by statistical and modelling procedures. An important topic of the lab is the development of automated arrhythmia detection algorithms with special regard to the identification of atrial fibrillation which significantly increases the risk of stroke. Investigations related to the body surface detectability of increased ventricular bioelectric lability (leading to elevated sudden cardiac death risk) broaden the spectrum of the lab even further. The research projects are sponsored by national and EU funds. In order to the professional management of interdisciplinary matters, an intensive scientific and technological cooperation has been established with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and some leading healthcare institutions, i.e., Institute of Technical Physics and Materials Science, Heart and Vascular Center of the Semmelweis University, National Institute of Clinical Neurosciences.

Results

The following results have been obtained on the informatical, modelling and signal processing research of bioelectric cardiac imaging methods:

  • Elaboration of measurement solutions related to electrocardiac imaging
  • Elaboration of modelling and statistical sudden cardiac death (SCD) risk assessment methods, based on ECG mapping
  • Elaboration of a new approach related to the solution of the ill-posed inverse problem of electrocardiography
  • Development of an efficient algorithm for the distinction of atrial fibrillation from other arrhythmias based on single-channel ECG measurements
  • Development of a new method for sudden cardiac death risk assessment based on single-channel ECG measurements
