Introducing SUE, an Open Source screen reader for visually impaired computer users
The project SUE: Screenreader & Usability Extensions aims at developing an Open Source screen reader for blind and visually impaired people working with Linux. It will enable this user group to interact with the  most common applications: the desktop itself (Gnome), an e-mail client,  a webbrowser, a text processor, and a spreadsheet application.  While this is a rather limited scenario in terms of both target group and  target applications, the software platform remains open and flexible to  support various use cases. The SUE project is funded by the German Ministry for Labour and Social  Affairs.

Martina Weicht studied Computer Science at the University of Applied  Sciences in Bremen, Germany. In 2007, she started working within the SUE  project at the IT Science Center Ruegen in Putbus, Germany. She is now a  PhD student at the University of Rostock and continues to work part-time  for SUE. Her main research interest is in accessibility and computer use  for everyone, human-computer interaction, and e-learning.
